Share of births is the fair comparison across a century: it is the name’s slice of all babies of that sex recorded that year, so a name from 1900 and a name from 2020 can be set side by side even though far more births are on record now.

Number of births answers a different question — how many people actually carry the name. Each name is drawn for the sex that accounts for most of its births.
